India’s deep tech startups have filed more than 900 patents since 2008 in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and neurotechnology. A study by technology industry body Nasscom revealed that 580 patents were filed in AI, 130 in IoT and 120 in neurotechnology.

The major areas in AI are image processing, natural language processing and predictive modelling. The top application area for these patents was healthcare, followed by automation/software development and retail/ecommerce.

The study found that the number of patents granted in India has significantly increased, with more than 100,000 patents granted between March 2023 and March 2024. Nasscom emphasised the growing focus on intellectual property rights in the country.

There was a surge in patent filings within the last few years, with India’s share in global patents filed remaining just above 2 per cent. The report recommended measures to enhance domestic patent activity, such as simplifying the patent filing procedure and appointing more domain and technical experts at the patent office.
