Amazon.com Inc announced on Thursday that it would discontinue its online learning platform for high school students in India, less than two years after its launch, without providing any explanation.

The Amazon Academy platform, which launched early last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided coaching for competitive exams such as the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which allows entry into top engineering colleges across India.

The shutdown comes as multiple edtech firms are under pressure as schools and coaching centres reopen across India following COVID-19-induced lockdowns.

Last month, industry leader Byju’s announced 2,500 job cuts as it strives to become profitable.

According to local media reports, other players Unacademy, Toppr, WhiteHat Jr, and Vedantu also announced layoffs earlier this year.
