The investment follows Shaka Harry’s $2 million seed funding round led by Better Bite Ventures, Blue Horizon, and Panthera Peak Ventures in July

Liberate Foods, the company behind plant protein startup Shaka Harry, announces that former cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has invested an undisclosed amount in the company.

The investment follows Shaka Harry’s $2 million seed funding round led by Better Bite Ventures, Blue Horizon, and Panthera Peak Ventures in July. The round was also attended by Dexler Holdings, celebrity chef Manu Chandra, and a group of domestic family offices and angel investors.

Shaka Harry’s products are available online through Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, SPAR, and Zepto. To sell products offline, the startup has also partnered with supermarkets such as Metro and Godrej’s Nature’s Basket. Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Gurgaon are among the cities where the products are available.

According to GFI research with Deloitte, which was quoted in the release, the right investments in talent, Research and Development, manufacturing, and distribution could propel the Indian smart protein sector to a market size of nearly Rs 19,000 crore by 2030, including a sizable export market.

Plant protein diets are said to be more sustainable, so they have received a lot of support in recent years. Enzu.Life, which operates the lifestyle nutrition brand PlantVita, announced in January that it had raised an undisclosed sum in a seed funding round led by Jito Angel Network.

With the growing popularity of plant-based foods, meat delivery companies are entering the market. Licious, a homegrown meat brand, launched UnCrave, a direct-to-consumer plant-based meat brand.
